Laura Butler

"I don't remember a time in my life when I was not driven by my imagination. My creativity has always been an important part of who I am. I found early on that I was not drawn to most "traditional art instruction", in part because I became bored easily and found myself daydreaming more than paying attention. I had a tendency to do things the hard way and it became very apparent to me that I flourished in my creativity when I was setting my own boundaries and ignoring most of the "rules" when it came to expressing myself as an artist.

The most influential teachers I have had in my life have been other artists. They have been both friends and mentors, sharing their talent, experiences, support, joy and sometimes frustration that comes along with being part of the art world.

As a child, I always loved doing things with my hands. I would spend hours on my own just making things. My artistic choices were different every time, although they always had one thing in common: my love for colorful patterns. I would easily use up an afternoon hand-sewing tiny items from fabric or painting intricate little designs on miniature sculptures that I had made out of clay. As I became older I went on to bigger things, but never lost my passion for creating things with color, intricacy and detail, which is apparent in my paintings today and also responsible for the style in which I paint that has be become my trademark.

With my family at the center of my life, it’s not always convenient to paint when I’m inspired to. As an artist, the need to create never goes away – it is a passion that becomes a craving when not nurtured, and feeding it is like chocolate for the soul. More often than not I have to make the time to paint and feel fortunate to receive the support from my family that is so important in keeping the artist in me alive.

I enjoy sharing myself with others through my paintings. What ends up on my canvas is something that I have seen or heard, believed in, felt passionate about, or experienced in my own life or intuitively through others.

The most fulfilling part of being an artist is knowing that through my paintings alone, I can make a genuine connection with another person without saying a word.”
